Welcome to ‘What’s new’ on the Values Education website for May 2007.
Values Education Teaching and Learning Activities
An inter-school project using inquiry learning, peer support to ease transition between primary and secondary school, and primary students acting as mentors to develop ICT skills of residents of a retirement village, are three new co-curricular activities including ideas, information and suggestions about how schools are implementing the National Framework for Values Education in Australian Schools outside the formal classroom context. Written by school-based practitioners of values education they contain practical activities for teachers to use or adapt in their communities.
Values Education and Quality Teaching: the Double Helix Effect
A brand new book on values education edited by Terry Lovat and Ron Toomey, Values Education and Quality Teaching: the Double Helix Effect is an outcome of the work of the Values Education Good Practice Schools Project – Stage 1 and the Values Education Partnership Project. The book presents six rich case studies on the relationship between values education and Quality Teaching.

States and Territories
In South Australia:
- A twilight seminar led by Dr Julia Atkin on Values Education and Middle Schooling was held on Tuesday 3 April and attended by over 250 educators. As an outcome of the seminar a full-day conference will be held with Dr Atkin on Monday 27 August in order to further explore her ideas.
- On Thursday 1 March, 80 South Australian teachers attended a workshop designed to explore the connections between values education and engaging young people with Asia.
In Tasmania:
- School forum snapshot: Distance Education Tasmania school forum discussions were an invaluable way of coming to know students’ families and their values more deeply.
In Victoria:
- Over 500 schools have now registered for the grant to conduct a values activity/forum A comprehensive promotional campaign associated with the Victorian values education conference on 2 May has increased the rate of applications.
- VCAA Bulletin P–10, Issue 28, April 2007 contains an article outlining the connections between the National Framework and the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS).
- School forum snapshot: The Values Forum at Undera Primary School complemented the school’s Garden Science Project and helped forge stronger bonds between the school and the community at a time of need.
Good Practice Schools
Values Education Good Practice Schools Project – Stage 2 National Briefing Sessions
The second national briefing session for the Values Education Good Practice Schools Project – Stage 2 is to be held on Tuesday 12 June and Wednesday 13 June 2007 at Kingscliff in northern New South Wales.
Values for Australian Schooling newsletter
The latest edition of the Values for Australian Schooling Newsletter (volume 5) has been distributed to all schools and is also available for downloading from the website.
