Values at Sunset
Queensland is kicking off 2008 with two ‘Values at Sunset’ events featuring Barbara Holland Ph.D. on the topic of Quality Service and Service Learning: Benefits and Impact. Barbara is Director of Learn and Serve, America’s National Service-Learning Clearinghouse. She is currently serving a sabbatical experience in Australia as Pro-Vice Chancellor Engagement at the University of Western Sydney.

Barbara will present at:

  • Gladstone – Central Qld University – 14 February, 5.30 – 7.00 pm
  • Cairns – Shangri-La Hotel – 27 March, 5:30 – 7.00 pm

Values Education State Conference (for State schools only)
Citizens for the 21st Century – What State Schools Value
21 April 2008, Sofitel Hotel, Brisbane

This conference will be both a celebration/review of the Australian Government’s Values Education initiative through a State schools’ lens and a gateway into the new Queensland State Schools Framework: What State Schools Value – Active and Informed Citizens for a Sustainable World. The conference will strongly feature the principles of the Earth Charter which have been incorporated into the state wide SOSE curriculum, with Mara Bun (CEO Green Cross Australia) presenting the keynote address.

Values Education Networks of Engagement (VENE)
A successful VENE meeting chaired by Barbara Bereznicki of Curriculum Corporation was held at the Pullenvale Environmental Centre on 29 October.

Participants also received some very practical advice from Margaret Richmond (director of Empower), listened to local schools sharing their successes around Service Learning and engaged in a planning session.
