Murtoa Secondary College, Values Education Poster Murtoa Secondary College, Values Education Poster

The Values Education Good Practice Schools Projects are proving a valuable source of case study material on values education in schools. However, other schools in Australia are tackling values education. We would like to highlight here some of the other schools’ achievements.

If your school is involved in values education and you would like to assist others on their journey by providing information on your school’s achievements please email Curriculum Corporation.

Murtoa College
In 2004 Murtoa College set out to incorporate values across the school in response to the first Values Education Study. This report outlines the steps and stages of their experience as well as examples of some of the material they are using with students.

The National Framework for Values Education in Australian Schools invites schools to examine their school policies and mission statements. Murtoa Secondary College, a rural school in Victoria’s central western region, adopted an inclusive and imaginative strategy to encourage the whole school community to develop and represent their school’s values by creating a poster that is displayed in the school.

As Ian the Principal says, ‘Over a period of three weeks we sent home ten values each week as part of the school newsletter. These values were discussed in households and at school.

In the fourth week parents were asked to vote for the twelve values they considered most important to our school. We had over 90 returns from a school family population of about 150. The staff were then asked to choose the 12 values they saw as most important and then the student body did the same. The combined results of that input have resulted in the poster. The student wellbeing policy is built upon the twelve values and the bullying brochure we have produced has the poster as a front cover. All Years 7–8 students have been involved in the construction of a Y graph which outlines what our school/classroom should look like, feel like and sound like. The posters are 50 x 40cm and have been printed professionally and are displayed throughout the college.’

Mackay West State School
At Mackay West State School in Queensland the values education program was launched with an attention-grabbing performance. The school has developed rhymes to help students remember the nine values and has set the students values challenges.

NEW Wantirna South Primary School
Wantirna South Primary School in Victoria began their Social Values Education Project through a community consultation approach, which first tackled the big question, ‘What makes a great school?’ The answer they uncovered was that the power lies in the attitudes, words and actions of each member of the school community.

Werribee Secondary College
Werribee Secondary College in Victoria will be launching their school values in term three 2007 and the Core Values Professional Learning Team, consisting of five teachers from various key learning areas, are involved in a number of initiatives in preparation for this event. These include awareness-raising throughout the learning community, development of laminated posters to be displayed in classrooms and working on the school logo that now features the school’s five core values:

  • respect and honesty
  • integrity
  • cooperation
  • perseverance
  • responsibility
