Cross–sectoral Collaboration
The ACT Values Education Advisory Committee involves the ACT Department of Education and Training working in partnership with the Catholic Education Office, the Association of Independent Schools, parent representatives, the Australian Catholic University and the University of Canberra to deliver values education professional learning and information about values education programs. The ACT Values Education Advisory Committee meets monthly.
Curriculum Framework Alignment
Until the end of 2010 the priority for all ACT schools is the alignment of their existing documents with the curriculum framework Every chance to learn: Curriculum framework for ACT schools: Preschool to year 10 and the Board of Senior Secondary Studies guidelines to ensure that the content, which is delivered, meets mandated requirements. The most significant elements of the framework are 25 Essential Learning Achievements (ELAs). Each ELA contains statements about opportunities to develop attitudes and values to be provided through teaching and learning in the ELA. Nine of the 25 ELAs emphasise learning of values linked closely to the Values for Australian Schooling, while others explore cultural or philosophical values in relation to specific essential content.
Work will continue with schools in this area. This activity will include aligning the Australian Government’s Building Values Across the Whole School resource package to the ACT curriculum framework and publishing these units of work on the ACT DET website for teachers to access.
