SBS World Tales

SBS World Tales presents a range of stories from different countries around the world. There are 20 animated stories and 80 text-only stories available online. The stories were sourced from listeners to SBS Radio and brought to life on digital screen by commissioned animators. They are an excellent resource for teachers wishing to explore ‘values’ in the context of folktales. Some of the World Tales stories are suitable for primary students and some are more suitable for secondary students while others are perennial and cross-generations.

World Tales reflect the multicultural nature of Australia as the stories come from the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas and the Asia Pacific region.

The SBS World Tales suite of resources includes animations, downloadable text stories, interviews with animators, and a Play section where students can play games as a way of further exploring the stories.

Of special interest to teachers are resources for using World Tales in Values Education, English and Literacy, Arts and Media, Careers Education/Transition, Languages (Global Education) and Studies of Asia.

The Values Education section provides a rich resource of seven activities which may be used in SOSE, HSIE, English, Literacy, Media, Technology, History and the Arts. Some of the activities include Introducing the language of values, Do Australians share values? and What is a moral?. In these resources students are invited to watch the animations, read and listen to interviews by the animators and discuss the values that are demonstrated in the stories such as compassion, hope, faith, freedom, dignity, empathy, respect and responsibility. The activities provide a variety of tasks and suggest approaches for follow-up activities.

The SBS World Tales Project is an initiative of SBS Digital Media and Film Victoria.
